On what has turned out to be a busy Wednesday filled with roster moves for the Vikings, the Arizona Cardinals were moving chess pieces as well. In the aftermath of Kyler Murray’s torn ACL that he suffered on Monday night, we saw the Cardinals snatch QB David Blough off the Vikings practice squad, according to Darren Wolfson of KTSP and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
Blough, 27, has spent the 2022 season on the Vikings practice squad after being released by the Detroit Lions following the preseason. He had spent his first three NFL seasons with the Lions, primarily as a backup to Matthew Stafford in 2019 and 2020, and then Jared Goff in 2021.
After Stafford suffered a season-ending back injury in 2019, Blough made five starts during his rookie season. In those five games, the Lions went 0-5, and Blough completed 54% of his passes (94-of-174), 984 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. In the following two years after that, he appeared in two games and completed 6-of-10 passes for 49 yards and an interception.
Blough appears to be the QB that will backup Colt McCoy in Arizona, who has now appeared in three games for the Cardinals this year and presumes to be the starter in place of Murray.
Meanwhile, the Vikings are left in the precarious position of only having two QBs. Seeing some of the QB injuries around the league (Baltimore, San Francisco) there are multiple teams who have been left playing their QB3 this season.
It will be interesting to see if the Vikings pursue another option for their practice squad, or if they will trust ironman Kirk Cousins to remain his streak of clean health. In 11 seasons, Cousins has never missed a game because of injury.
